04. Maternity Photography – Pose Ideas

Maternity sessions.  Perhaps the definition of a successful maternity photographer is that the photographs make pregnancy look effortless, serene and peaceful?

This mama was beautiful – her Mona Lisa smile quietly notified the world that she is ready.  And she didn’t need a photographer to coax that serene smile onto her lips.  The peaceful expectation in these shots is all hers.

She had some great ideas for poses, clothes, and quasi-clothes (scroll down a bit for that one).

And I got to try a few ideas that I’ve been wanting to play with.

I never thought about maternity photography poses much, especially as they relate to mom’s comfort.  I saw a picture on Flickr of a mom lying down, in profile, with a black shirt over her pregnant belly and these alphabet blocks on top of it. By the time we got to this series of shots, this mama had had enough of lying on her back, so we had to rethink the pose.  And I actually like the sitting-up version better!

She looks gorgeous in these un-clothes, right?

My favorite picture frame. . . .

I did 99% of my editing work in Lightroom and Nik Software’s Dfine.  I accidentally had my ISO set to 1000 instead of 100 when I took these shots.  Were they ever noisy.  But Dfine cleared them up easily.  And I learned to check my camera settings after my daughter plays with it!

Expect a tutorial next week about the easiest way to create a selective color image in Lightroom – no selections required!  And use the poll at the right to let me know whether you’d be interested in Lightroom Presets.  I know that most of you use PSE, but I can’t tell you how much quicker and easier Lightroom is to use!

Subscribe to the Texas Chicks feed, either by email or RSS to make sure you hear about this easy way to selectively color your image!

Wow! It looks like you’re an “official” photographer now! These shots are great…the picture frame is very unique. I never thought about that either but a pregnant belly does get sore pretty quickly, good reminder to think about her comfort during the shoot!

Thanks for the wonderful ideas! I had maternity photos done with my first, and I’m just getting to the point where I really want to do them again. You’ve got some great stuff up there! Although I’m not sure I’m brave enough to do the “un-clothes”!

I have a close friend who is pregnant and we discussed taking maternity photos so this post is good timing for me.
Thank you so much for all the work you girls do and sharing your knowledge with the world! I myself am a Texas Chick living in Atlanta but a true Texas girl for sure!

These are great. The last 9 weeks of my pregnancy I posed with a variety of vintage hats I have collected. As I was carrying twins, the idea was to see the growth in the last trimester, but as I love a theme, it was also fun to use the hats each week. Even better when my daughter put on a hat and joined me for the pictures.

April, you are not the only person to ask me that question! My daughter received them as a present 5 years ago, so I just don’t know where they came from. I actually wish they were a bit bigger! I received some sort of classic toy catalog in the mail not too long ago – I didn’t keep it and don’t remember the name, but you might try googling something like that. Thank you for reading!

I loved all your points..My favorite photo shoots are Maternity! I started my business little over a year ago and I do lots of maternity shoots. I always try to do something different with each and everyone of them. I love and only use Lightroom. Super fast and easy!

It’s awesome to pay a visit this web site and reading the views of all colleagues about this piece of writing, while I am also zealous of getting familiarity.
